Lodge pole pine frequently occurs with other species as the second component of a mixed stand. Outbreaks can start or be maintained in these stands, particularly since pine vigor declines during natural succession to spruce or fir. Simply removing the pine from these stands will reduce landscape susceptibility while retaining forest cover to satisfy other objectives.
