The desire for the discovery of renewable liquid fuels and commodity chemicals has escalated due to the environmental impact of current production methods, supply security due to geopolitical tensions and decreasing total reserve of petroleum-based fuels and chemicals. We have recently discovered a novel yeast that can oxidize xylose to commercially important chemicals. Major international and national companies such as Royal Dutch Shell, The Dow Chemical Company, ExxonMobil Chemical Company and Sasol Ltd are involved in manufacturing chemicals; all of these commercial compounds are produced by chemical methods resulting in significant pollution of the environment.Creatus Biosciences, Inc. was established specifically to support research that will provide alternative, cost-effective and environmentally sustainable technologies to produce these compounds. Creatus has signed an agreement with UBC to fund genetic engineering of our novel yeast to overproduce commercial compounds. Creatus will be working with UBC yeast geneticist, Dr. Hennie JJ van Vuuren. He has significant experience in metabolic engineering of wine yeasts, and the first two genetically engineered wine yeasts approved by the US FDA were developed in his laboratory. Our strategy to over produce these commercially important compounds will rely on genetic engineering of metabolic pathways as explained in detail in this proposal. Creatus will file for patent applications and commercialize or license these technologies.
