Milk thistle oil (Silybum marianum) is obtained from a plant. Its medicinal properties are found in the walls of ripe fruits (achenes), and are attributed to silymarin, which is a mixture of compounds called flavonolignans, which are considered highly lipophilic and relatively stable. Silymarin has been used to treat liver disorders associated with alcohol consumption, chronic and acute viral hepatitis, and Amantia phalloides toxin-induced liver failure. Silymarin has antioxidant and tissue regenerating properties, it can be used for gallbladder disorders, jaundice, skin diseases involving liver dysfunction, protection of normal cells during chemotherapy and to treat hypercholesterolemia.
