About Our Brooms
Granville Island Broom Co. makes hand-crafted brooms using traditional Shaker methods. They are designed to be both functional and decorative and will last many years with daily use. The fibre we use to make the brooms is called broomcorn (Sorghum vulgare), which became the standard for making brooms in the early 1800s.
Historically, brooms in North America were round. They were commonly home made by tying together tree branches, grasses, or whatever was available. In the mid 1800s, the Shakers developed the stitched flat broom, which we continue to use today.
