The handmade carpet industry employs over 20 million workers and artisans in the country. Currently, India is ranked first in carpet manufacturing and exports. In terms of exports, India ranks the second largest carpets exporters among countries like China and Turkey and accounts for nearly 55 percent of global carpets exports. The major carpet-manufacturers states in India are Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Kerala, and Andhra Pradesh. The government has formed Carpet Export Promotion Council India to promote Indian carpet export, rugs exporters, and other floor coverings exports.
