Flibanserin is a 5-HT receptor modulator used to treat certain premenopausal female patients with acquired, widespread hypoactive sexual drive condition (HSDD).

In August 2015, the FDA approved flibanserin as one of the first drugs for the treatment of premenopausal women suffering from hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD). This medication was initially working as an antidepressant, but over time, it didn't produce enough efficacy in various trials and was subsequently changed to become a treatment for hypoactive sexual disorder. The mechanism of action of flibanserin is dependent on its high affinity for 5-HTA1 and 5-HTA2 receptors, which exhibit agonist and antagonist actions, respectively, that lower serotonin levels in the brain while raising levels of dopamine and norepinephrine neurotransmitters.
